How Much Does It Cost to Install CCTV?

The cost of installing CCTV will differ based on your requirements. It is unfair to give a figure as so many factors can impact the cost of installing CCTV, such as:

Do I Need Permission to Install CCTV For My Business?

You do not need permission to install CCTV to protect your commercial premises. However, you must follow some regulations set out in the Data Protection Act.

You must:

  • Put up a sign that states you’re using CCTV and why it’s being used
  • Provide images to anyone recorded within 1 calendar month
  • Share images with the police and other authorities if they ask for them
  • Store images only as long as your business needs them

If you follow the above regulation, you are following the law when using CCTV at your commercial premises.

Is Wired or Wireless CCTV Better?

Wired and wireless CCTV cameras both have advantages and drawbacks, and some types of camera suit businesses better than others.

Wired security cameras are the more traditional choice and are more widely used as part of larger systems. Wired security systems require cables for power, connectivity and video transmission. However, PoE (Power over Ethernet) systems only require one cable. An ethernet cable provides both power and connectivity, reducing the number of cables needed.

A wired security system set up correctly is exceptionally reliable. A wired system is all physically connected, meaning it might be more reliable than some options.

Wired systems can support more cameras than a wireless system. This means a wired system is more appropriate for properties requiring comprehensive CCTV camera coverage.

A wireless security system is made up of cameras that transmit footage wirelessly to the recorder. Wireless cameras must connect to your network, either wirelessly or with a cable. Wireless security cameras do require wired power to keep them operational.

Installing a wireless CCTV system is easier and takes less time than installing a wired system. There is no reason to run cables from the recorder to the cameras, which can substantially reduce the installation time. Wireless cameras are more flexible as a result, because you don’t have to consider their distance from the recorder when you are installing them.

Different Types of CCTV Camera

Here are the most popular types of CCTV camera available:

  • Bullet CCTV Cameras
  • Dome CCTV Cameras
  • Infrared Night Vision CCTV Cameras
  • IP CCTV Cameras

Bullet CCTV Cameras

Bullet CCTV cameras are usually installed outdoors. They are ideal for monitoring a large area and capturing high-quality footage.

Since bullet cameras are mostly used outdoors, they are held in protective casings. These casings are designed to help the cameras withstand the elements. Most bullet cameras are IP 65, 66 or 67 rated, meaning they are ingress protected against water and dust.

Dome CCTV Cameras

The name of a dome CCTV camera derives its name from the dome-shaped casing the camera is held in. Dome CCTV cameras can be used both indoors and outdoors, making them a versatile option for securing your business premises.

It is difficult to tell where a dome CCTV camera is pointing, which acts as a further deterrence to criminals. This type of camera is also discreet, so you can have them inconspicuously installed throughout your building.

Infrared/Night Vision CCTV Cameras

Infrared/night vision CCTV cameras are designed to capture brilliant footage, no matter how light or dark it is. Infrared cameras used advanced technology to capture the same high-quality footage no matter how much light is available. These cameras typically cost more than other types, but their capabilities are also much greater.

If your business needs to record footage in pitch black environments, you need night vision cameras. They are ideal for environments where you need to record good footage 100% of the time.

IP CCTV Cameras

If you want flexible cameras that you can access and control from anywhere, IP CCTV cameras could be best for your business. You can access a livestream from your IP camera through web portals and apps, even when you aren’t on the same network as your cameras.

If your recordings are stored on a secure online platform, you will be able to access them from anywhere providing you have the login details. You will be able to access recordings via a range of internet enabled devices, such as smartphones and laptops.

If you are often away from the office, IP cameras offer great peace of mind since they can easily be accessed remotely.
